A27 St. Margaret's roundabout update

The County Council have been asked by the Forum to investigate the possibility of improving the entry capacity on the Cartwright Drive approach to the roundabout. The Forum felt this could be achieved by extending the two lane entry, currently restricted by a hatched right turn lane into the Holiday Inn hotel. At peak times vehicles have been observed queuing over this lane.

The right turn lane was provided to reduce the occurrence of right turning vehicles waiting in the carriageway being shunted by vehicles leaving the roundabout, or blocking the exit causing delays to the A27. Preliminary investigations into what might improve safety on the roundabout have been undertaken. Signalisation has been considered, but rejected due to limited queuing space on the circulatory carriageway.

The Transport Team South are planning to conduct traffic counts on Cartwright Drive, including use of the right turn lane, in order to properly consider the impact of any improvements to capacity.
